The Centennial Exhibition of Gifu Prefectural Ceramic Research Institute 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Research Institute (former Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Testing Center), which was established by the prefectural government’s industry section in 1911 as a branch office for testing ceramics. The institute has made many significant achievements over the century as a testing, research and educational facility. Examples include the promotion of coal kilns, research and promotion of sei-sekki (a type of slip-glazed stoneware), and the testing and research of inglaze and microwave kilns. Also notable is the fact that through the foresight of the institute’s first director, Ibuka Sutekichi, as well as that of Kato Kobei V, who became the first non-civil servant to head the institute, ceramic artists such as Kato Hajime and Kato Kozo, who later became national treasures, were invited to join the staff and provide guidance to the ceramic industry. The institute preserves approximately 2,500 test and sample pieces made by these outstanding masters, constituting an indispensable part of the history of modern ceramics. The exhibition surveys the institute’s century-long history through 200 works selected from its collection.
